Athletics Team - 2018-2019

On Tuesday 25th June 2019, the athletics took took part in a tournament at Medway park.  The first event was the mini marathon in which Bobbie and Taylor ran.  Bobbie got off to a great start and finished 18th out of 56.  Taylor started the race with a sprint, quickly putting him into the top two.  As the race continued, Taylor became more confident and pushed himself to be the front runner.  It was a close finish after a few children accelerated towards the finish line but Taylor managed to hold onto his lead.

Throughout the morning, the children participated in different field events; basketball push, discus, vertical jump, speed bounce, cricketball throw, javelin, long jump and triple jump.  Each child's scores were combined for each event.  Some highlights were; 4th in the discus, 4th in the speed bounce, 8th in the triple jump and 9th in the long jump.  This put us into a great position for the other running races in the afternoon.

60m run by Tyrone and Rhea, 100m by Preston and Nalan and the 200m ran by Che and Aleeza, all of whom put in a sterling effort.

Once all of the times were combined we finished the day by coming 6th overall.  A superb achievement.

Year 1 and year 2 infant agility team - 2018-2019

On Thursday 20th June 2019, the Year 1 and 2 infant agility team were chosen to represent Medway at the Kent Infant Agility School Games.  It was a fantastic achievement to be invited to this event after previously winning the local event.  The level of competition was exceptionally higher but our children rose to the challenge.  The children competed in 7 individual events and all tried their very best.  The children ended up finishing 7th out of 15.  A fantastic achievement for all involved.

Quarter Finals

The Academy of Woodlands versus Swingate (Court 1)

A nervous team arrived on the court where they huddled together for their final instructions and encouragement. Once their names were signed up there was no turning back. Rackets ready and a determined look on their faces they played as if going into battle. All teams attacked the shuttlecocks which flew back and forth until it was slammed down to the ground. The insistent attack of the mixed team made the opponents run for their lives and finally surrender their game.

The Academy of Woodlands 3, Swingate 0

Semi Finals:

The Academy of Woodlands versus Balfour (Court 1)

The crowd gathered behind the team. As the first shuttlecock flew over the net towards the opponent, it suddenly flew back. Rackets ready for the attack and voices of encouragement from the teams family and friends. Competition was fierce as the girls battled it out. A brave unwavering team stood their ground as the shuttlecock twisted and turned to the back of the court.  Finally it was all over as the girls succumbed to the opponents drop shots near the net.

The Academy of Woodlands 2, Balfour 1

The Finals:

The Academy of Woodlands versus Warren Wood (Court 1)

The tension could be felt in the sports hall, as all courts were occupied with badminton players. Nervous adults and children surrounded and prayed for their teams to do well. The boys were on first, taking in a deep breath and releasing the shuttlecock to the other side. It was so quiet; you could hear the ping of the strings pushing against the shuttlecock. Lots of tension, nervous breathing and encouraging each other came from the boys and a loud voice shouting, ‘Che stand on the line… to the back… to the back, ‘rung around the court. It was a close match, as the final strike was made and a roar of cheers echoed. The girls and mixed team were superb in their attacks and recovery as bullets of shuttlecocks were smashed at the opponents and reflected back.

As the audience held their breath, at the final hurdle, The Academy of Woodlands won the Night of Champions for the 5th time. Well done.

The Academy of Woodlands 3 Warren Wood 0

The team would like to thank all the adults and the badminton club for their commitment, support and encouragement   through the year.

Table Tennis - Night of champions - 2018-2019

First game was against Miers Court who we beat 4-2.

Next up was The Pilgrim School who had beaten us previously.  Was extremely close game as we tied 3-3.  However, we had beaten them 8-7 on legs meaning we were through to the final.

The final was against Warren Wood who were extremely good.  They beat us 4-2 which resulted in us coming 2nd.

Kent Basketball Tournament - February 2019

On Friday 1st February 2019, The Academy of Woodlands took part in the Kent Basketball tournament.  This is where the top teams from each region compete to become number one in Kent.

Our first game was against Minterne Junior School (Miss Beer’s old primary school) who we beat 12-3.

Next up was Malling and Sevenoaks who looked as though they would be tough competition but we managed to also beat them 12-3.

Our next opponents were Dover, they gave us a tougher game but with grit and determination we managed to beat them 6-3.

We knew our 4th game would be extremely tough as Ashford had also won all of their games so far.  They had some extremely tall players who made it really tough to score against.  They beat us 6-5.

Our final game was against Gravesham, we knew if we won this, we would secure our place in the semi-finals.  We were winning all the way until 30 seconds to go when they scored an excellent basket to go one point ahead.  We knew we had to score a basket to win.  With 10 seconds on the clock, Che lined up to take a shot that hit all parts of the hoop before sinking in! We beat them 8-7.

Semi-finals- We were up against Warren Wood-the winners from the other pool.  We knew they would give us a good game but through sheer skill, we smashed them 8-2.

The final! We were back to facing Ashford again.  Throughout the whole 8 minutes, it was a battle.  There were injuries, fantastic shots and a lot of sweat.  Unfortunately, they beat us 7-5 resulting in us finishing 2nd.

Second best in the whole of Kent is still an amazing achievement.

Our second match was against Fairview, who we also smashed 11-0.

Next up was Oaklands, with some excellent team work and accuracy, we beat them 12-0.

Game four was our toughest game of the day.  We knew Swingate had not lost a game yet but we were ready for a battle.  Fortunately, Che and Preston led us to victory and we won 5-3.

Our fifth opponents were St William of Perth who we cruched 16-0.  We manged to spread the scoring out between the team.

St Andrews were up next.  They are always a well organised team but we managed to beat them 5-1.  The team were disappointed to concede one goal but a win is a win.

We faced Horsted next, after great baskets from Che, Preston and Josiah, we beat them 6-1.

Finally, we faced St Margret's.  we had a feeling that if we won this game, we would finish 1st overall.  The opponents were all much taller than us but with our skill and speed, we managed to beat them 8-0, resulting in us finishing FIRST.

With an exceptional goal difference of +72, we were unstoppable.

MYG - HOCKEY TOURNAMENT - October 2018

On Thursday the 18th October 2018, The Academy of Woodlands (after a lot of training) took part in the hockey mini youth games tournament at Holcombe Hockey Club.  After a tiring, energy-draining but definitely fun day, we were crowned CHAMPIONS as we were the only school to win all of our games.

The first two games (Oaklands and St Thomas at Troy Town) were a simple breeze with us brutally smashing the oppotition 5-0 and 4-0.  In the first game, Preston, Che, Bobbie, Alok and Jessica each scored one goal each.  In the second game, Preston and Bobbie both scored 2.

For the third game (English Martyrs) we knew they would be tougher opponents but thanks to Bobbie and Preston, we beat them 2-0.  After a much needed sweet-filled break, we were against Balfour who we crushed 4-0.

Next, we faced Warren Wood who we knew would be extremely tough.  Despite this, we still beat them 2-0, securing the final goal with a great short corner.

Through great team work and determination, we managed to beat Miers Court 3-2, the only team who managed to scored against us all day.

Our last two games (St Andrews and Hempstead) were a lot easier than expected and we knocked them out of the park, 2-0 and 3-0.
