Learning a foreign language is compulsory in Key Stage Two. Here at the Academy of Woodlands, we believe it is important for our children to experience a wealth of different cultures. Therefore, we will be teaching Modern Foreign Languages on a four-year rotational cycle. These languages will be Spanish, French, German and Polish. From September 2021, our pupils will learn Spanish.
Our high-quality languages education will foster our pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. In the early stages of language learning, children will spend much of their time listening and speaking. Later on, children will be encouraged to develop reading and writing skills, which will be supported by, and reinforce, the development of oracy. Throughout the MFL curriculum, children will be taught to listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding. Children will develop accurate pronunciation and intonation and describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing. They will also be taught to understand basic grammar.
Our teaching will provide our pupils the foundation for developing their language skills further in Key Stage Three.
